D.O.C Pizza & Mozzarella Carlton

Damn that Masterchef.  Italian Week once again left MerlinFan and I with a craving for all things cheesy and we actually headed down to D.O.C for lunch last week, only to discover that despite stating that they were "Always Open" on their Facebook page, they were only open for lunch only on Thursdays to Sunday, but for dinner everyday.  That's how we ended up going to Papa Gino's instead.

Anyhoo, with our craving for pizza not quite satiated, MerlinFan and I made another trip down to Carlton to try D.O.C pizza & mozzarella today.

The interior was packed and noisy, will lots of tables squeezed quite closely together.  Nevertheless, there were windows which opened up the space and gave it that warm, sunny afternoon feeling.  I got the impression that they were pretty family friendly with lots of groups and kids around.




 And a little bit of history printed on the menu.  Who can say it better than D.O.C itself.

We were given a good amount of time to decide before our orders were taken.


Condiments
 We had the Limonata.  Refreshing to cut through the cheesy richness of the pizza.

We were hoping against common sense that one of the pizzas consisting of fig, prosciutto, gorgonzola and buffalo mozzarella would be on the specials board but obviously it wasn't as fig season was far from over <sob>.

We shared a Pizza ai Porcini, which was topped with wild mushrooms, truffle oil, mozarella oil in bianco and grated pecorino.

I loved the crust on this pizza.  It was light and thin, slightly salty and crisp on the edges. The large mushrooms were soft and juicy, gave the pizza a nice earthiness, however MerlinFan and I felt a little salt would have brought out the mushroomy flavour a bit more.  As nice as the pizza was, halfway, the carnivore in me was craving meat and I kind of wished I ordered something with meat, prosciutto, anything!

We enjoyed the pizza here - would love to return in the warmer months and see if that fig pizza is back on the specials board.
